Freaky update…

My morning started out very scary. Sacha had been nowhere to be seen ever since yesterday morning, which just isn’t normal even for a hunter like him (see my entry about his hunting habits). Needless to say, I was worried dead about him! I whistled and called for him as soon as I was up, but he wasn’t coming. Finally, at about eight o’clock (keep in mind that the last time we had seen him was around 10:30 AM yesterday) we heard a miraculous meow; Sacha was waiting at the front door, a mouse hanging from him mouth. I think he was apologizing for all the worry he caused us!

But right now he is causing me way more worry… The first thing we noticed was his many new battle scars. So what, I thought, he’s probably been fighting with that black tom that we sometimes see hanging around. Well, Dad looked at him more carefully, and just announced that because of the scars on his chin and throat, he believes some bigger animal has grabbed his head in its mouth. Raccoons, maybe. But that’s just not to say the truth…

The hunter became the hunted. A classical tale… Sacha was caught by a fox. I can hardly believe it, though I knew he would eventually meet a fox. Honestly I would rather have him hit by a car than devoured by a fox. I am so worried that he will meet him again! Because of his wounds we are keeping him inside for a few days (hopefully we will go back to the city soon… I can’t bear the fact that he could meet this fox any time now) but I know that he will soon conquer my parents’ hearts who will let them out.

Anyway, that is today’s freaky story… Now we have another little problem: the kittens probably have worms again. Sometime last night Pollux had diarrhea on the bathroom carpet near the litter box (yuk-yuk…) and now we are smelling a strong smell of urine downstairs somewhere between the dining room and living room.

Those cats are really in for a visit at the vet!!

  1. I’m enjoying your blog, thanks for sharing.

  2. OMG that is sooooooo scary. I can’t believe it. A fox and a cat having a battle with one another. Sacha sure is one brave kitty. Where do you live that you have foxes nearby? Out in the countryside somewhere? Good luck with everything!!!

  3. Hi Maureen,

Thanks for your kind comment! I’m really glad to know that you’re enjoying my blog and I hope that I will be able to update it regularly.

To answer your question, I actually live in Montreal, a 1.5 million people city (yup!), but don’t worry, that’s not where the foxes roam; we own a small cottage about 450 kilometers away (a five-hour drive) in near-total wilderness where our kitties have a LOT of fun hunting chipmunks, squirrels, mice and other rodents. There are also raccoons, porcupines, deer, and the dreaded fox hanging around, making this place a cat heaven (and a place for humans to chew off all their fingernails in worry).

    Cheers,
    Maia

  4. Hi there,

I sort of understand how you are feeling. My cat went missing a couple of years ago for 3 days. When we eventaully found him (after knocking on doors on our estate to ask if people had seen him). He was hiding in some bushes in somebodys back garden in the snow. He had been hit by a car and suffered horrific injuries. We didn’t notice them straight away until we got him home. He had a broken back leg (his femur – it was completely snapped, it’s the same as a human snapping their thigh) and a hole in his other side the size of a 50 pence piece. We rushed him to the emergency vets where we discovered that he also had blood poisoning and the hole was actually exposing his spine and the bone in his tail. The cold weather had probably saved his life because if it was warm then maggotts would have set in. The vet said he wouldn’t have survived another night. He had his leg pinned but suffered from nerve damage. After 2 weeks he was dragging his back leg behind him and we were advised to have his leg amputated. When he was on the operating table and ‘out of it’ the vet realised that he still had blood poising and to operate would infact kill him. By some miracle, the nerve damage healed in time and his leg was saved!!!

Long story I know, but we do care and worry about our pets don’t we!

Hope your little sweetie gets better very soon.

    Gorgeous cats by the way!

  5. Claire,

Thank you for sharing your story! You are so lucky to still have your kitty – and I just can’t believe how you must have felt when it happened.

How we worry about our pets?! You got it – I spent 75% worrying over those cats! But it’s worth it… they are the best thing that ever happened to me.

    Cheers,

    Maia
